I got schooled pretty good over the 2004 hurricane season.
Got a pretty darn close up shot if how my life would change.
I know it can be done.
Everything just takes longer to accomplish.
Yes, Americans take the luxury of consistent utility services for granted.

I have recently seen The Day After Tomorrow. It is all about facing a major climate change and how to face it.
If there is no electricity than it will be like that for some weeks. There are so many sharp minds in the world that they can think of something else.Oh but look at the positive side of it.No TV. ,no noise and peaceful evenings.(Just Kidding)

I practice this every summer and call it camping.
JOB: I am a trucker, so my actual job wouldn't change much, but the shippers/receivers and truckstops would be in quite a pickle.
FOOD: stored in coolers like iceboxes. Ice would have to be harvested from lakes in winter.
WATER: still available from nature, boil or gravity filter system
LIGHTS: batteries, recharged by solar
EARLIER BEDTIME: maybe, after all, there are mini baby booms after any major blackout :)
Yeah, a country boy could survive

I don't know where your great grandparents were but mine had electricity.
It is hard to think of a way that electricity could disappear forever. There are multiple sources all linked on grids. If wires go down there are people to put them up again. If you are in an area served by underground cables they are storm proof. Some sources are local (hydro generators and windmills and solar panels).
It is a good question but should be in the science fiction category.

You don¸t know what you are capable of until it happens.Thousands of people live in war areas for years. They survive(some) and it is much worse than living without electricity
