People use home computers in many different ways. What are you gonna do with yours?
Editing family videos? or Just internet surfing?
I use mine to make videos is for "Home". It's a HP Pavillion DV4000.

If you are only going to use it for surfing with web or email, just get a cheap laptop. Ideally, you want to set it up with a wireless connection so you can use it in any room of the house.
If you live somewhere where you can access an existing wireless network, great. Otherwise, you will have to have some additional hardware to have a wireless connection in your house.

If you are going to be travelling a lot with it, go for something sturdy, ideally with some sort of built in shock protection, or you might find that all your valuable work is inaccesible after it being thrown around in a car boot.
I am an IBM T30 user...it's more expensive, but i would recommend it

Sony are the best laptops. I bought one for my final year of uni and it never let me down. They are a little expensive but worth every penny!!!!!!
