Without Nipples the Male Chest Looks Strange - move cursor over link text or nipples in picture to left. The nipples provide a focus point for the male chest. They direct the eye to the curve of the pectoral muscle.

Men and women are mammals (from the Latin mamma breast) a species that have breasts and feeds its young with milk. The human embryo has tissue that will evolve into breasts. Both male and female babies are born with nipples and ducts intact. It is the presence of genes that direct hormones to differentiate the breast tissue. The Y chromosome stimulates hormones such as testosterone to form male features.

Insufficient or defective testosterone, poor tissue responsiveness, or an unbalance of other hormones like Estrogen and Prolactin can cause female like breasts even in men (Gynecomastia). At birth, the small amount of the mother's estrogen in the baby can result in small breasts that usually resolve. There can be an inbalance of hormones during male puberty that can result in temporary breast growth, which for most resolves. There are many medical problems and drugs that can cause male breast growth.

The nipple is actually the central protrusion inside of the pigmented areola. There is a thin muscle just under the skin that when stimulated, tends to flatten the puffed male nipple areola. This muscle when stimulated in a breast feeding woman, projects the nipple for the baby. Nerves that innervate the nipple / areola can produce pleasure for both men and women.

The male chest without nipples has an unusual look - move your cursor over text or nipples. Dr. Bermant did not remove the nipples from this bodybuilder. This picture is after surgery to sculpt the previously deforming gynecomastia. Men's nipples and areola that are puffy can distort the male chest profile. Long nipples can also be a problem.

Because we are mammals and blessed with body hair, three middle ear bones, and the ability to nourish our young with milk that females produce in modified sweat glands called mammary glands.

Although females have the mammary glands, we all start out in a similar way in the embryo. During development, the embryo follows a female template until about six weeks, when the male sex chromosome kicks in for a male embryo. The embryo then begins to develop all of its male characteristics. Men are thus left with nipples and also with some breast tissue.

Men have nipples because when a fetus is growing in the womb, it doesn't actually have a sex at first. The baby starts forming but the sexual organs don't appear until later on in the pregnancy. The nipples form before the baby either becomes male or female. Hope that is helpful :-)

When in the womb, at a certain stage, the Y Chromosome kicks in. This is past the point at which nipples are produced. It's simply because the base blueprint for humans is the female body. Males simply have extra bits.

Men still have nipples because the foetus is always female at start. Nipples in men is a vestige only used for adornment. Keep them. OK ?

Male or female is only controlled by one chromosome, everyone has the genetic information inside them to become male or female and so it isn't until the 12th week of prgnancy that "gender" develops - by that point we already have nipples and other attributes. For instance women's "G-spots" are actually the prostate that began to develop before the XX chromosome stopped it.

Why do men have nipples? They don't use them for anything. But based on that criteria I think a better question is "Why do women have brains?"

Because all creatures start out as females in the womb. When the testosterone kicks in, the chest area has already started to form.
