They keep you from dying from typhus and dysentery as people did in the old days before water systems had germ killers added.
Chlorine has the benefit that it stays active in pipes all the way into your house so it gives lasting protection. If you don't like its taste or smell try a water filter or letting the water stand in fridge before drinking.
It is close to impossible to drink too much chlorine from drinking water or swallowing water in a pool. You would need to drink most of the pool for that to happen. I think that is an old wives tale.

It is to kill germs and purify the water. HOwever, if you put a reverse osmosis filter and water softener on your pipes, it is even better. It filters out the chlorine, and other things that give it that bad taste. I love my water. I can always tell when someone doesn't have filter, their water smells like a pool to me.

if it doesn't have a lot of chlorine or you don't drink it a lot then you're fine. if you drink pool water accidentely or once or twice you are perfectly o.k. the chlorine kills germs and bacteria so you are safe there. chlorine actually helps... but if you drink a lot of it or drink it often, or both it can kill you. so don't do it for the heck of it. only do not worry if it happens accidentely! thanks

Prevents 'wildlife' from growing. It does not kill anything, that would also make it hazardous to humans. It merely prevents bacteria from reproducing. If it takes long enough the bacteria will die without offspring. Good enough for me.

Rotten taste. Not many physical effects if it's not for a long period of time.
