I get a basket or box and fill it with stuff most people don't think of,
hangers for baby clothes 1.00 at walmart
nail clippers for baby .97 at walmart
medicine pacifier (very useful) 2-3.00 at walmart
wipies 2.00
bibs 2-3.00
teeting toys 1-2.00
extra bottles 2-3.00
baby spoon 1-2.00
everything is from walmart.
I usually just go through the baby isle and anything I used and didn't get at my shower, that is what I get. If you have never had a baby, then ask your mom or a friend what they used the most.

There are many things that are special but there are things that are just needed. I have had 2 children and one on the way. Every time i go to a baby shower i give the mother to be a pretty basket that can be used on the changing table to hold powders and thing then i fill it with johnson and johnson items and towles, wash clothes and i always include an item called "Butt Paste". It's a godsend when a child has a diaper rash. it will clear it up in a day. not many people know about this item so it could be considered unique. they carry it a target and online. depending on the size of the basket you can purchase smaller sized bottles and it should be less than $30.

For a basket, I'd recommend going to the $ store. You can pack the basket full for only $10 or $15, and buy the basket there too! Plus you can use the extra money to get one nice gift, or a gift card. One more thing, getting slightly larger sized diapers or clothes is a good idea because everyone else will get the 0-3 month sizes and one the baby grows out of those the mom has to buy a whole new wardrobe.

Well, you said unique.Gift baskets are pretty practical, but very useful just as gift cards are.For $30 you can get quite of bit of stuff if using the gift basket idea.Little blankets, diapers, wipes, diaper rash ointment, rattles, pacifiers, teething rings, car toys anything and everything for babies put in it,and half the stuff named is only like $1.50-$2.00.Also,another idea that you could include in the gift basket which would be very inexpensive is a collage or a scrap book.Look at your pictures,or ask her husband or boyfriend or parents even if they got pictures from certain months of her pregnancy from 1-9 months. You could even have those pictures.Make a collage or scrap book of those pictures. You could even include a gift for mom, lotion, bath and body wash some little something to make her feel appreciated. There are so many gifts for babys, mothers, and mothers-to-be that you can make yourself at such a low cost.Good luck and congratulations to whoever is going to have a little one.

Lansinoh
breast pads
good breastfeeding book - The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding
gift certificate for meals after the birth
savings bond
photo albums
frames
belly casting kit
footprint/handprint preservation kit (the plaster kind)
Baby Safe Feeder
Hyland's Teething Tablets

EDITED TO ADD:
Jachooz is wrong. There is NOT "always a need for a bottle." Many breastfeeding mothers would be offended if given such a gift. I would ONLY even recommend giving that particular product to a mother of multiples.

I know that baby shower is for a baby :-) However, as a mom myself, I loved that my friend got me something. You can get Bath and Body Works small/travel size lotion/shower gel/body spray for under $30. Or if you know mom prefers another brand go with that. Mom can take it with her to the hospital. I used mine there and it did make me feel better :-) Among all the baby gifts yours will stand out!

I made my sister in law a diaper wreathe... I went to Michaels and bought a small wire wreathe holder, and bought a cheap pack of size 3 Walmart brand diapers and , got washclothes, a bottle, a onesie, shoes, comb & brush set, and baby ribbon and hooked all the diapers on and then decorated it with all the baby stuff I got. She used it as a door hanger for her shower (the guests LOVED it) and she got to keep it and all the stuff on it and it costed under 20 bucks! Otherwise another one of her friends bought the pampered chef carosel that you put untensils in and put stuff ike lotions and q-tips and what not in it... it was awesome!

Usually a gift basket is a good way to go. Also if the mother is into scrapbooking then get her some of those supplies. Shop at your local dollar stores they sell everything from baby to crafts.

Here is the best gift...
A basket filled with diapers, wipes, baby lotion and baby bath! And then I would throw some body wash in for mom. You can fill the basket up with odds and ends until you feel you have spent what you want.

The best baby shower gift is gift cards. If she has gift cards she can use it for the things that she is missing and for things not thought of before the baby.
