I want a career change. But at 47 yrs old, I don't want to spend 4 years in college to do so. I want to be one of the people at the "help desk" who troubleshoot computer problems for office workers.

Places like Heald College offer short programs in computers and other things. Junior colleges offer 2 year programs. I'm a software engineer. You pretty much can't get a job as a software engineer without a B.S. degree. But any knowledgeable person can get some help desk/customer support jobs. They don't pay a lot, though, and many of the companies that have them run them like sweat shops.
