Go to the icon, right click and go to properties and then click on the tab "securities" it lets you control who can edit what, who can read etc...

Under Tools, you'll see something called "Protect Document..."
you can put a password (make sure you write it down) and then the doc will be read only to everyone that doesn't know the password

Another option is to convert it to a PDF file - beside not being editable, you will be certain that no matter what fonts you use that others will see it exactly as it was meant to look. You can do this for free using something like http://www.primopdf.com

besides protecting from word itself (save as premssion)
You can also do a file protection. Only you and administrator can have full control on it.
Of course, putting password is the safest way!

Scan it into PDF , PDF takes a picture of your word document so no alterations can be made to it
