As the computer "guru" of my family I am always called to fix a problem. But this one has me stumped: My brother's internet went down with verizon, they fixed thier end but it still won't connect. They told him he has to reset or reinstall the ISP becuase it's either corrupted or missing. Also they can't tell him how becuase it's a problem with the computer not verizon. I have never heard of this - any advice? Would reinstalling specific software or reformatting the entire comp work?

Uninstall the Verizon Software from the computer. Also see if you can update the NIC Adapter Drivers. After doing this reboot then when it is up again, check if the NIC Adapter is recognized properly by the OS. Finally re-install the Verizon Software.

Their answer sounds WHACK.

You did not say, but it sounds like you are talking about a DSL service. Check the lights. Then with the Computer, open a Command Prompt and type IPCONFIG. If the DSL modem has assigned an IP address, then at least something is functional. (IPCONFIG should show an IP, Subnet Mask and Gateway address).

You didn't mention anything about using a Router...

Sometimes the people at the DSL office can see the modem, but there is still a problem in the line somewhere. If you can plug a different computer, where your brother is plugged in, you will probably see that the DSL service is NOT working.

Reinstall the ISP? I guess you go to Verizon, blow up the building and then rebuild it. Can't imagine why they would want you to do THAT though. Verizon is the ISP...
