There are many people who say "we are as happy as we choose to be". Is this true?

Actually, Dearheart, it is indeed. One can either dwell on the positive in life or on the negative and that's what really affects one's mood! I'm a happy person because I chose to be while my son (bless him) chooses to be a pessimist. There's a great deal of difference in the two of us. I like being happy. Blessings on you, my dear.

some people can fool themselves into being happy with no basis other than "cuz i make it so",,, i can say that there are times when i have to step back and remember to let go of whats negative, to feel better about the moment, and it does work, theres also the point of excepting something as good now just cuz it aint as bad as before,, which i think is a joke. Self willed happiness is a fools Paradise, which there is nothing wrong with being there but i find it better to get something accomplished and move to the next place to do and when i do need a lift i can reflect on goals done or just plainly enjoy right here right now,, but on of the best places to be for me is knowing that the next challenge will be met head on and chased down till its done or irrelevant,, i think in a nut shell my answer would be "know thy self" and build from there,, look at san ann 68"s answer :)

If we were an island, we must make that choice.
When we depend on another person for happiness, we fail to use "choice", and "allow" that person to cause us unhappiness, or give us happiness.

We tend to blame all our unhappiness on others.
Just human I guess. Psychologists address that, but even they can suffer from unhappiness.
We all succumb at times.

Without details, I have found happiness in creating music. It's my life now. Keeps me from dwelling on all the hurt, although I can express some of that in music.

Yes. Your thoughts make things happen. You choose to let things bother you or not. Life is about choices. It takes alot less muscles to smile than it does to frown. Laughter is the best medicine.

It's an attitude, it's a lifestyle .... So yes it's a choice .... Sometime though, you can't choose it simply because someone dear has died ... but don't reject happiness because of a hair in your soup!!!
