When making first contact with the ball, instead of moving your shoulders back and the chest forward and up, do the opposite, move your shoulders forward sort of trying to 'trap' the ball with your chest and lean downwards.

Don't push out, let your chest and stomach almost collapse back in on yourself. Basically try to get your cest to react like a net when the ball hits it so it rolls down. Your stomach shoud be almost behind your feet when it hits so it drops to your feet, then you are on the attack again.

It is hard to teach your body to back up like that as headers and foot moves are forward. Have a friend or parent toss them at your chest a dozen or two times, starting easy and getting faster as you get the hang of it.

You need to lean back when the ball strikes you so that it rolls up your chest a little to lose momentum before it falls.

The opposite way works too. As it strikes you, lean forward so that it is deflected down.

Practice them both.

put your body at a slant so part of the energy in the ball makes it go vertical...then just retrieve with your foot. Possibly jump backwards as the ball hits your chest.
