Go to windows upgrades website. Have the site analyse your computer. It will tell you if your system will support XP. If you have the activation code for 98, the site will tell you if an upgrade is available.
There is a possibility that you need a new motherboard or a new computer, since the chip on a computer with 98 installed may be so old that it is really too slow to bother installing a new operating system.
If that is the case, in my opinion 98 is a good enough OS for you to use until you can get the faster equipment. Consider that the new computer will come with XP installed, saving you the cost of the upgrade. Good new basic computers are not that expensive.
The best way to keep your data safe is to invest in an external hard drive. You can transfer that drive with all your files to another computer (plugs in to usb socket) There are different types, study well before using. Be familiar with the technique of changing it from one computer to another.

If you are talking about an old computer that came with Windows 98, I wouldn't upgrade... it would be too slow for Windows XP. For Windows XP, I would recommend 512MB of RAM and other enhancements.
Hey, that Windows 98 computer is probably almost 7 years old.... it will DIE at any minute now, so you better have good backups.
NO, you can't use your Toshiba disk to install Windows XP on a different computer. That CD was created for the Toshiba, and you probably would get an error message telling you that.

I think Yes. When you insert a XP installation cd in the cd drive, the opening window on the screen shows the option either to upgrade or to make a new installation. By default the upgrade option is selected. If it is so, then you can go ahead and upgrade. It will keep all your data and software safe.

Wouldn't reccommend upgrading. I've always had problems. Backup your data, make sure you have all of the original disks for your software, and wipe the drive and install from scratch. You'll also clean up unused stuff from your drive that way.

yes, there is, when you put the XP cd in your cd-rom, and u choose to install windows XP, it'll ask you whether you want to upgrade or make it a new installation, so choose upgrade, make sure you back up all your data though, and make sure you have the serial number for windows XP.

I trust partygirl. setting up xp is elementary using fact the OS disks will self setting up yet will wipe the disk interior the technique. XP desires much extra skill on the compuer than Win98 and we've an previous Dell which we save on Win98 cos it basically aint effective sufficient to safeguard XP. bear in ideas in case you dont have a sturdy back up of your "previous" HDD you are going to be able to desire to lose Win98 and fail to run XP properly too.

I would backup my data first it would be a mess to have to recreate it. Either lap link it to another computer or burn disks. You can also put it on a portable USB device or harddrive.
