Car auctions are required by law now to list any flood damage thanks to Hurricane Katrina. Many dealerships had cars that were damaged in the flooding and several insurance agencies were concerned about those cars being re-marketed back out to unsuspecting consumers.

If you can go to one of the police or sheriff auctions in your area, they are held yearly and sometimes twice a year. http://www.policeauctions.com/
You can get all sorts of great cars and usually outdated police models. The police models typically have been very well taken of...regular maintenance and tuneups. Most replacement parts are cheap, just hit the junkyards.
Repo auctions are usually bad. People who know they are going to get their car repossessed have a habit of running them into the ground before they are taken. I've never had any luck at those sort of auctions.

Good advice to take someone knowledgeable with you. Beware that the car could have unforeseen problems, or be a real bargain. The first and only car I bought at an auction, my son helped me pick it out. I paid $425 for it, and have been driving it for 7 years now, with less than $1000 in repairs and maintenance during that time. When people go out to buy a car, they often forget to factor in maintenance costs, and get in over their heads. Good luck!

No the best place is face to face with the previous owner. Receipts maintenance history first hand is very valuable. "This car belonged to my grandmother she went shopping once a week and drove it to church down hill both ways so it cannot be worn out!"... "Or 1978 ford farmont wagon good condition owner passed away in the car." Remember if the car was perfect they would not be selling it test drive and if it feel ok. ask to take the car to your mechanic. If it passes mechanical inspection and that gives you better barganing posistion buy the car
