The best advice is start small! Find out what the smallest engine size that qualifies as a motorcycle is in your state. Engine sizes are measured in CC's and if I remember correctly most states 60 or 70 cc's is considered a motorcycle. Use this small bike to take your test and gain your confidence then when you feel like you have completely mastered handling that move up to a larger 250 cc motorcycle. In a year or two you should be able to handle a HD Sportster no problem.

Don't start out on a Harley Sportster. They may be smaller, but they are top heavy and taller, that can be intimidating for a first time rider. They also have take off power which could be dangerous if you are not used to it. Harleys are hard to ride since the clutch is not hydrolic. I would strongly recommend a Honda Shadow 600cc. It is lower to the ground, which makes it comfortable when you have your feet down. It is small enough to learn on, yet not so small that you will outgrow it in a month. Plus, Hondas are low maintenance. I started out on a Honda Shadow 600, I rode 26,000 miles in 3 years. I traded it in for a Harley Sportster, I love both bikes!

You can do either one of two things.
1.Start out on a Harley sportster from the start, or what I suggest is a great bike for smaller people, only because it's light and fast.
The Kawasaki Ninja 250cc. It's price is 1/3 or any Harley. Get bike, I have a female friend who has had three of them, she loves the bike. it only weighs 327 lbs, where all HD are around 650-950 lbs.

If your eventual goal is to ride a Harley, I'd say start on a small cruiser. If you find the 883 Sportster intimidating, check out a Honda Rebel or a Yamaha Virago 250 - they're small and very easy for a beginner to ride.

I'm going with DesignR on this one. Stay away from the sportbikes. Why a Harley? Do you purposely want to look and act like a dirtbag or pretend to be something you're not like 90% of the Harley boys/girls these days?
Harley riders are one of the biggest jokes on the planet! And the NOISE should be outlawed!

A streetbike or cruiser that you can sit on with you feet flat on the ground and you arms relaxed when holding the grips. Honda VLX 600 Shadow has a low seat, is light, handles well , is stylish and makes good power, for a VTwinkie.

I totally agree with harleychic about the sportster,, too tall and top heavy. lots of harley lady riders opt for Fat Boys, or Dyna's they have a lower center of gravity.. and if you want harley, go for harley, no matter what people here advise you...Good luck to you and ride safe...

Ingore maddmax, his wife left him for a dude with bada$$ Harley. Start with the sportster or something small like that. Make sure you can reach tthe ground comfortably, and dont get into the throttle toomuch too fast. After a year or two, buy that hog you want, and make sure you get extra loud pipes to make Maxx angry.
