soil (vegetation in an advanced state of decomposition) mixed with water to create a stodgy consistaency. Not very clean or nice smelling. However, there is an old story of a Spannish Princess who lived in the Palace who once watched some children having fun playing in the mud outside the Palace. Her husband filled a marble room full of rose oil, rose water and rose petals to make a pinky, sweet smelling mud for the princess to play in.

take dirt, sand, and water and mix.
There is no "perfect mud" but 2 parts dirt, 1 part sad, and 2-3 parts water is a good start
It's actually hard to keep mud mud because the water drains away fast.
