'Avatar' to a Hindu has a specific meaning than what the Yahoo has been using, may be to ridicule the Hindu feelings. By 'Avatar' a Hindu means that Supreme Divine power which has descended on Earth in a human form or any form chosen by it to correct the corruptions in the system. Etymologically 'avatarana' in Sanskrit means 'to descend'.
Avatar in Hindi and other sister Indian languages is also understood as 'the projected image of a person'.
It is not a cartoon that a person selects for himself in the icon against his e-mail Id. Yahoo's effort to dilute the meaning is ridiculous!

Avatar is a Sanskrit/Hindi word. Avatar literally means "descendant". To take an Avatar means "to descend".
Rama , Krishna are revered as Gods or Avatars of god on this earth in Hindu tradition.
Other than that , someone who has qualities or attributes which are highly venerated and are supposed to be "God like" it is said that person is Avatar of God on this earth.
Yahoo has used this very Hindu word to refer to the images , representing Answerers on YA.
