We'll be driving to CA from RI in mid September. I'll be driving the Uhaul and my wife our car. We have a dog and a cat. It's the cat I'm worried about. We have a crate for her w/her bed, etc. and my wife plans on getting a harnes and a leash to use when going from the car to the hotel, etc. Still we are both kind of at a loss as how the experience will play itself out. Does any one have any advise or experience you can share of like circumstances??

My husband and I made a very similar trip with our dog and cat. We were both in the UHaul, and we pulled our vehicle behind on a trailer. Actually, the cat rode in the vehicle we were pulling behind. We put a litter box in the floorboard, and he had food and water in there, too. We put towels down. Most cats won't like riding at first, but honestly the cat could probably just ride with your wife in the car, maybe not even in a crate. When you stop to get out, put the cat in the crate. If you lock it up the whole time, though, the cat might get cranky.

I think you should use the cage and put it in the front seat of the car or the Uhaul. I recamend that you put the cat in the Uhaul and than put the dog in the front seat of the car. Dogs have to go to the bathroom you know

You know your cat the best. Is the cat used to being in the car? Does the cat enjoy going for car rides? If it's a cat that gets very upset and howls, you may want to talk to your vet about a mild sedative to keep the cat a bit calmer.

weve taken our dog on trips befoeand thats worked out but those were only short ones. just make sure that they have enough water and food in there. just get a large mouthed bottle so that you can pur the excess water in if they dont finish all of it. also, cats dont do well at all with leashes. and you might want to get a bigger cage for your cat and take stops often. good luck!

My sister took her cat on a 14 hour road trip and it was horrible. She shrieked and cried and panicked...she ended up peeing all over herself. The had her sedated for the next trip. But all cat's are different...some love the car!
