Say you've worked at a national retail dep. store at the mall for 3 yrs, you recently (3 wweks ago) took on a second job as a nursing home care aide. You're being paid 6.30/hr at the store, and 6.25 at the nursing home. You were just offered a position as manager at the store full time, if you take it you have to quite the nursing home. The person who gives you the offer for manager says, "what will it take for you to stay with us full time as jewelry manager?" The pay for the previous manager was $8. It's funny because I was thinking of starting classes to become a registered nurses aide, and perhaps courses to be an LPN so I can make more money (LPN would take me at least a year or two), because I wanted to start working full-time and really enjoyed things at the nursing home, then again, I enjoy my job at the mall too. Problem is I don't know about the apy if I could move up higher at the store, but I do know that LPN's can make $18-more /hr.

I was in a similar position. I had two jobs. One at a retail store and one working as a secretary for a CPA. I chose to finish my education (in accounting & computer information systems). I was offered the store manager position where I worked, but I was also attending classes. In order to take the manager position I would have had to quit school. Fortunately I made the right decision because the store closed one year after I chose to stay at school and with my education I was able to find a good job. My advise would be to finish school, but you have to make the decision that is best for you.

I'd keep the job at the nursing home and go to school for the LPN. At some point, the job at the mall would fall by the wayside. It would make for some pretty lean times, but there's a high demand for nurses and once the training was done, you'd be set.

I guess the 1st question you would have to ask yourself is does the job at the nursing home pay for you to go to school? If the answer is yes I wouldn't take the management position at the mall. Also if you stay at the nursing home, that would be more experience you could put on you resume and that could also count towards your externship, which you would have to complete before you complete nursing school. However if you really need the money then stay at the mall and worry about that later, but if money isn't stay at the nursing home.

I would take the manager's position and use it as a stepping stone for the nursing. Use the extra pay to help cover the costs, and perhaps you could go ahead and enroll in night classes while you are manager at the store. The management position will also look good on a resume for job referances - it shows responsibility and organizational skills. You will never be able to make as much money in retail sales as you will as a nurse - so long term, that's a good goal for you. Good luck with your decision!

You enjoy both jobs that you are currently doing equally. But as you get to the next levels, the nature of the work changes--and it's hard to know now if you will like working at that level. Try talking with people who've been in the more advanced level jobs for a while and ask them what came as a surprise to them when they moved into the higher level position. That will give you a bit more information to help with this long-term decision.

Good luck!

Take on the Manager position.. There is a saying that goes.. Better bird in hand, than a flock flying... Something like that.. Take the manager job and go to school in your spare time. It may take you more than 3 years to finish your Associates, but you have something tangible to support yourself. Plus been in the Air Conditioner at the mall beats changing diapers as a CNA. Good Luck and it is great you have something going on in your life...

Tough choice. You may have to ask yourself whether the idea of nursing is closer to your heart than is the idea of selling jewelry. The lower-paying nurse's aid position may not provide an immediate reward in terms of money, but in the long run, you might find it more satisfying. What I'm about to say might be regarded as heresy, but the truth is work is not entirely about making money. Work is our way of contacting the world. Do what you love.

Go for the nursing job, it makes more money. In the meantime, see if the retail store would consider keeping you on as "part-time" manager.

retail pay never gets better- $8 an hour is about the poverty line these days

we will always need qualified nurses in our lifetime, the pay can be excellent $15-$50 dollars an hour depending on location

what do you think will be more satisfying in the long term?
nursing will also come with better benefits and retirement planning
