Three guys are eating at a restaurant. When they finish, their tab is $15. They decide to split it evenly, so they each give $5 to the waiter. The waiter gives the money to the store owner, who happens to be a good friend of the three guys. The store owner decides to take $5 of the three guys' tab, so he gives the waiter five $1 bills and tells him to split evenly among the three guys.
The waiter is not very good at math, and also not very honest, so instead of figuring out how to split $5 among three people, he just gives each guy a $1 bill and keeps the other two for himself.
Now each guy paid $5 and got $1 back, so each guy effectively paid $4. There are three guys, so between thre three of them, they paid $12. The waiter has $2 more in his pocket. This adds up to $14. If the original tab was $15, then where did the remaining dollar go?

Nice - stretching the grey matter a bit. 15 - 12 (that the waiters have) = 3 which the three dudes have. So it works. The words just twist it something horrible.

It's easy dude, you're just looking at the wrong side of the problem. They effectively paid 10$ since the owner returned the 5$ to the waiter. The guys got 3$ and the waiter got 2$. 10+3+2 =15.

Each person paid $4 - a total of $12. The store owner kept $10, and the waiter $2 = $12. The waiter's $2 is included in the $12 so you can't add it again.

The original $15 is irrelevant.

Horribly old math problem.

The original 15 is relevent, the people didn't pay 4 dollars, they paid 4.33. (as in 15-2 is 13, divided by three people means that each paid 4.33)

I hope none of the people that answered this in any way other than including the .33 are not high school graduates, because that would be so sad.

15$ paid by 3 guys.
15/3 dollars paid per each person.
store owner kept 10 dollars.
waiter kept 2 $.
now let us summerise,
(15/3+15/3+15/3 -5)+(1+1+1)+2
=15$
(15/3+15/3+15/3 -5)=given by 3 guys,3$ received by 3 guys,2$
kept by waiter.

As soon as the owner returns the $5, each man's tab is instantly $3.33. When the waiter gives them $1 each and keeps $2 for himself, our accounting is:

$4.33 + $4.33 + $4.33 +$1 + $1 = $15

Every time a dollar changes hands, taxes are due. You should know that by now. Uncle Sam took it!
