Hmmm I think you want to cover too much unless time is no issue. US is B I G, so why not focus on a couple of area's? Explore these then come back to enjoy other states. Consider regions like Alaska, British Columbia, California/Arizona, Florida, New England/New York. You see there's just too much to do.
A car is a must to travel except in New York City. Public transport is a drama in the US and you get nowhere except from airport to airport.

Depends entirely on how much time and money you have! If both are endless, get a convertable and drive coast to coast, planning your route as you go!

Assuming however that you are working under some restrictions.......car is definitely the best way to travel when you can afford it. The Greyhound is an experience....not necessarily a good one, but definitely an experience! Flights are cheap and easy.

Travel the coast of California and don't miss out on Yosemite. Vegas and New York are also a must.

My wife and I have covered the lower 48 and most of southern Canada. We only take the highways as needed. We never chose a particular route, just took the road atlas and drove. Took whatever route we felt like on that day.

It's interesting that everyone assumes you mean the US. I have friends from Chile who talk about America but mean South America and refer to themselves as American.

However, I once drove north from Las Vegas on the I-16 and then all along the border of Arizona and Utah as far as the Grand Canyon and then I had to stop. It was pretty amazing and mostly very hot.

My suggestion would be to rent a car,if money is no object, and travel on state and local routes. You will find much more diversity and many more interesting sites than if you travel the interstate hiways, which tend to be rather boring.Although you will still see some beautiful scenery from them.

North/South in the East, Rt.1 Maine to Florida. East/West Rt. 66. All local roads through all types of towns and scenery bypassed by the interstates. By automobile, of course, although you can take bus trips.

Train and bus, coast to coast (but maybe not to New Orleans or the Deep South, Texas etc).
