I have always used the scientific terms for my son's anatomy when answering questions - I'm not sure he even knows any of the slang terms for penis (he just turned 6).
About saying it in public...it's something, isn't it, that people look at a young child oddly when he/she uses the correct anatomical terms as opposed to the slang? Maybe it's because if they say balls, it's assumed they've heard the word but don't know exactly what it might mean. I want my son to know, but I don't want him educating all the other first graders, so we have talked about how it is part of him that is his alone (like the privates comment).

When the two of you are talking about it PRIVATELY then I would use the word testicles...that's what they are. However, I would also explain to him that this is not a word that we use around other people. Explain to him that talking about these things is supposed to be private and not something that we talk about around other people. And then explain to him that they are ALSO called PRIVATE PARTS .....IF they're ever talked about around anyone else. I've been the 'father figure' to mine and my sisters 9 children(no we didn't have children together for you sickos out there) their fathers are all deadbeats and drug addicts. I've ALWAYS found that it's best to talk children as though they are just 'LITTLE ADULTS'...the less you 'baby talk' a child or beat around the bush such as 'nicknaming' body parts etc the higher chances are that your child will be walking, speaking CLEARLY, and comprehending what it is that you're saying alot sooner than a child who is constantly goo gooed and gah gahed at....Your child begins learning IN THE WOMB and doesn't stop until he or she parts this world.....you should focus on teaching them the correct ways. For example, if a child is trying to say Mommy or Daddy and he/she hears you say MA MA o r DA DA then the child's mind is recording DA DA as the CORRECT WAY to say DADDY when in fact it is not as we all know....DA DA and DADDY are not the same and sound NOTHING alike. I'm not saying to read to child from a dictionary. but DO talk to your child beginning while he/she is still in the womb and talk to them in REAL WORDS not 'baby talk' and see just how much more quickly their tremendous little minds develop than a child who has parents that DO baby talk their child. After raising 9 kids I can tell you for sure THIS DOES WORK......

Nads. But, that's just me. Of course, I think I'd rather my son say testicles than balls/nuts, etc, or vagina instead of p*ssy or c*nt. Let him use the scientific version.

We try to teach our children the correct words for their body parts. It just makes sense. Why do Americans have such hang ups about body parts? Would you teach him to call his elbow or his foot by a silly name? No, of course not. So teach him to call ALL of his body parts by their proper names.
