After looking over other answers I recommend
not reading Robert Jordan (books too long and
with very little happening) or C.S.Lewis (boring).
Guy Gavriel Kay's The Fionavar Tapestry is a
powerfully moving one at times, very good. The
3 volumes are The Summer Tree, The Wandering
Fire and The Darkest Road. All of the Eddings
books: The Belgariad (5 volumes), The Malloreon
(5 volumes), Belgarath the Sorceror, Polgara the
Sorceress, The Elenium (3 volumes), The Tamuli
(3 volumes), The Redemption of Althalus.
Other recommended authors, Mercedes Lackey,
Anne McCaffrey, Raymond Feist, Terry Pratchett.

It isn't exactly similar to LOTR but I loved the series also. After reading the LOTR, I tried the Outlander series by Diane Gabaldon. Wonderful series! Plus, it kept me occupied for a couple months (each book is 1000 pages and there are 6 books). If the want to try it, the first book is called Outlander and it is blue. It isn't elves and dwarves. It is a woman from the 1960's who time travels back into the 1700's. I'm usually not one for time travel but this book is different! Out of every book I have ever read (and I read alot) this is the best series!

Here are some suggestions: The Fionavar Tapestry (3 books) by Guy Gavriel Kay, David and Leigh Eddings have a few series out that are definitely worth reading: The Belgariad and The Mallorean.

I would suggest the Wheal of Time series by Robert Jordan…but the series went from “fun and interesting” to “man this guy writes long books that just don’t go anywhere.” But you can check them out if you like, the series did start out good.

Try Stephen King's "Dark Tower", inspired by Tolkien's works and by R. Browning's poem "Child Roland" (it includes 7 books and 1 additional part). There's also Nick Perumov's "The Ring of Darkness", a free sequel of Tolkien's triology (5 books, if I'm not wrong); visit this web site for details: www.nick perumov.com
