Volunteer and get a degree in fire science (or whatever your local college calls it).

You may also want to join the armed forces and get placed in fire fighting. That gets you trained by the government, makes connections and looks very good to fire departments.

Vonunteer first. It will give you experience and then you can see if it's really the job you want to do. They will help you with what they had to go through, and if you get in good with them, they may have a job for you when you are done training.
