My Dell laptop starts up normally (with the Windows XP screen) then goes to a blue screen that says this:

STOP:c0000218{Registry File Failure}
The regiistry can not load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Beginning to dump physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

I was not trying to load anything prior to this message. I was reading a news site, shut down for the night and when I tried to turn it back on that was the message I got. Any suggestions?
I removed the batteries (and ran it off the power cord) as someone
had suggested that in the past. Didn't work.
Does this suggest I have a virus or I have lost everything?
"Physical memory dump complete" doesn't sound good!

A physical Memory dump isn't necessarily a bad thing, it is just dumping the data into a file that it can send to Microsoft so they can help you with your problem, try pressing F8 when your computer starts to boot and choose "Last known Good Configuration" if that doesn't work choose "Safe Mode" and go to www.iolo.com and download System Mechanic which has a Registry fixer.

See if it will come up in safe mode, when you see the Windows splash screen, hit F8. Choose Safe Mode. If this works, in safe mode click on start, click on run, type msconfig hit enter. Goto the startup tab and uncheck everything. Then restart and see if it works ok. If it works then there is a program starting that is crashing. If not, then the OS is probably corrupt. Then you should use your windows XP install cd to do a repair of the OS. Do this by putting the CD in and booting the machine from the CD and follow the instructions to repair windows. Hope this helps

This should answer your question:

Should you need to resort to reinstalling your Operating System from CD, do a fresh install if you have Windows XP. I tried to do a repair and thought it went well until Windows Genuine Advantage wrongly accused me of having illegal software. The same software that came with the computer, key and all. I had to do a fresh install which did well.

If you have valuable data on your hard disk that you should have already saved but didn't, you would have to remove the hard drive and use it as a slave to a master disk, or use an external enclosure that you can put it in and hook it up with USB and take your data off of it that way.

Good luck. I hope it goes well.

Okay...
Turn the computer off... then back on... pressing F8 several times.
You'll get some choices of 'how' to boot up.
1st time, select "Last known good configuration"
if that doesn't work
(turn off / turn on)
2nd time select "Safe Mode"

That has 'fixed' me before.
good luck
