My naval piercing is 4 months old, but I still need to clean it. I read on a couple sites that if you can't get near a sink/shower, that saline solution (used to clean contact lenses) can be a safe alternative because of the bacteria cleaning and salt properties. So is saline solution safe even for my naval piercing? (If anyone needs to know, its a ring, not a barbell.) One other question, since I have the original ring still in (I believe it's 16 or 14 gauge), should I go back to a piercing shop to get the the jewelry changed? I'm still kinda of scared that I'll mess it up.

It's recommended. It's just salt water, really, just sterilised. When I got my nose pierced I was told to clean it with salt water.

contact solution has different chemicals than saline solution, not much different but why not just go the safest route and get the spray can that says saline instead of using contact solution (if that's what you meant) Yes it is safe to use but doesn't really compare to general cleaning and salt soaks, it's more for when you cant do a soak such as at the gym or a pool. There is no need to change your jewelry (though a ring will put more pressure on the piercing which could lead to rejection-so I would personally change it to a curved barbell.) if your having no problems with it. If your uncomfortable changing it on your own by all means go to a studio and have them show you how, they're there to help

I don't know about saline. I do know that sea salt water works great. You can buy sea salt at the grocery store. I can't see why saline solution wouldn't work though. If it is safe enough to have in your eye then it should be fine.

Naval piercing is the hardest to deal with, after many years, mine sill acts up sometimes. Saline is fine, but my body does not like salt. I use an antibacterial soap and leave it alone.

don't use contact solution...it's not just saline, it has other chemicals in it to.

go to the store adn get some sea salt. then it's about 1/8th teaspoon/8 oz...it should be no saltier than a tear.

or get some h2ocean. it's purified sea salt in an aerosol can.

and about the jewelry, go back and have them put in a barbell, it'll heal better once that's in instead of a cbr.

I either use rubbing alcohol or hot salt water to clean my earring, it worked really well for me cuz i had a lot of trouble with it wanting to infect when i went from a regular post to a ring. It cleaned it right up and now I'm up to an 8 gauge. hope this helps
