I go across a toll bridge everyday and have done this not for the reaction, but to try to be a nice person. I've also had the toll unexpectedly paid for me, and it gives you a feeling of hope for the human race.

No, but somebody paid my toll once, funny.
Kevin Matthews the brilliant schizoid (he did lots of voices) radio guy in the late 80's in Chicago used to tell his listeners to do that. Harmless fun!

When I was in my teens my friends and I would pay peoples toll.
The reactions we would get would be funny. Peolple would hang back and not want to pass, so we slow down so they have to pass or drive 45 mph on the freeway. Some times they would drive up to see if they knew us, it seemed like most people thought it was funny.

Yep - always seems to confound them for some reason. I dont' get it - it's a simple "nice" gesture!! I reckon folks aren't used to others being nice.
