they were checking to make sure you weren't in the telecheck system for writing bad checks. just cause you have money in the bank doesn't mean you don't write bad checks. plus, you ever watch discovery? say you get in trouble for anything, its just another way the government can keep track off everything you do in life.

Many of the check guarantee companies have a database that flags accounts that have had bounced checks, etc.

The third party check guarantee company guarantee's the merchant payment for the check. In doing so, the machine checks to verify that the account is open and in good standing .. that your drivers license number is not related to a bunch of bounced checks.

Some do electronically withdraw from your account the next day or so, but some just verify that your info is valid and you don't have bad history related to check cashing.

They were probably checking to make sure it's a valid account, money's there and that it's not a fake check. A lot of businesses do that but no money comes out until after they deposit the check :)

They are verifying that you have money in your account. The business won't recieve the actual money from you until they deposit your check at the bank.

they are checking to see if the check was reported stolen, and if the account is open, and if there is money in it, and if there is a history of bounced checks.
