why did my icons disappear in my task bar even tho i have checked them to always show?

my normal programs are listed in the task bar (word, publisher, show desk top, etc.) but the regular icons left of the clock are missing such as the volume control

I already made sure my icons were checked always show in the properties menu, but they are still hidden. I cannot get to my volume control or any other programs that are running.

Right click on an empty space on your taskbar and then click Properties. Uncheck the box at the bottom that says "Hide Inactive Icons"
