I have no idea what it is, where to get one or how to add it.

Have an old Compaq Deskpro, and was prompted to add the above after connecting a 4port USB 2.0 hub.

All Answers written in idiot-proof language would be gratefully received. Please assume I am thoroughly stupid.

Thank you folks.

A hi-speed USB host controller is a PCI plug-in card. All you need to do is install the drivers that came with the card if the ones that Windows installed weren't compatible.

Ok this is dead easy, you need a PCI USB host controller that is USB 2 compliant. Your device will work in your USB ports on your computer but will just be slower than if you have a new controller. Go here http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductInfoComm.asp?ID=23131 this also has a firewire connection on it as well, you might as well have this as well. All you need do for yoru deskpro is remove the case top as you look inside you will see some slots the card will fit into one of those slots, remember to remove the blanking plate where the card sticks out of the back of the computer and you will be away, If you have windows 2000 or XP then the device will be automatically added and you won't need drivers, if you have win 98 SE 1 then you will need to add the drivers.

What this means is that your hub is a high speed USB 2.0, while your CPU does not have USB 2.0 butthe older version. You can install a high speed usb pc card if you like, but the hub should still work without installing anything, just not as fast.

its a pci card you get from any pc shop.

plug it into the slot and turn on,
(open pc and u'll see it will only fit one type of slot,
anyone will do though as long as it fits!)

if u have 2000 or xp it'll probably just work,
else run the cd with it and 'hey presto'
