If you've used the computer for a couple years or so without ever reinstalling the original operating system (like Windows XP), then it may be time for you to save off your important files to a flash memory thumb drive and reinstall Windows XP from scratch. Once your done installing everything you want on the computer, you need to make an "image drive" of the new install drive before you start corrupting it by surfing the web etc. There are many backup software applications that allow you to store an exact bit for bit copy of your C drive which is called an "image". One well know application is Norton's Ghost.

First question is: were you doing the same thing each time when it froze? If so, then there's 'something' with the application you were running.
Check to see if you have a bunch of 'other' stuff running (down on the taskbar beside the clock) turn off what you don't need. It could just be coincidental, that your 'net' connection was having problems. Was the net involved each time?
good luck

Next time tell what it is that you were doing when it froze and you will get better answers.
In general, if you can get it to run try doing a virus scan.
www.trendmicro.com has a free online virus scan.
Also, I would download Ad-Aware from Lavasoft.
Other things to try would be to edit your startup folder, and clean the run settings from your registry.
Lastly you could try to kill some processes that are running.
The last two suggestions are really not for inexperienced users though.

Well it could be a number of things, but do start out by running Disk Cleanup!
* to Run Disk Cleanup: Click "Start >" "All Programs" "Accessories" "System Tools" and Finally "Disk Cleanup"
** OR Click "Start" and select "Run..."
From there, paste the following in the text box and select "OK"
%SystemRoot%\system32\cleanmgr.exe
Once you've successfully executed Disk Cleanup, perform a disk scan (Should do automatically) and before you run the actual cleaning process, insure you've checked ALL options available on the list.
Now restart and I will walk you through more steps. Please append to your question and I will add it to my watch list. Thanks!
