I have a 2006 Alfa GT gasoline version and need to relocate to the United States. I would like to bring it with me as it is brand new and I love it. I have found Alfa service and dealers in the Seattle area where I plan to relaocate, so in theory service is not a problem. DOT seems to says all European passenger vehicles are essentially compliant.
Can I bring it to the States? Has anyone done it?

As far as I know you can't because it hasn't gone through the USA testing. ...but since the make of car you want to bring over is sold here it shouldn't be a problem. You can check into it with the DMV, the Alfa dealer, or US customs just to make sure.

NO NO NO don`t sell it.. do whatever it takes to bring your Alfa here... imagine you`ll be the only one in Seattle or the States with an Alfa GT, even movie stars don`t have an unique car... TRY TRY TRY! I was thinking about getting a Peugeot 407 over here...

You say that your are relocating. I assume that to mean thaty you are moving "permanently" to the US. If so, be advised taht most European vehicles do NOT meet DOT standards. You need to contact the DOT and find out what, if anything, needs to be changed before shipping your vehicle. Believe me, it will be cheaper to change it before you ship it.

If you ship it to the US and it doesn't meet specs, then it will be impounded and you will not be allowed to remove the vehicle until it is in compliance. This is a near impossiblity.

Some things that may have to be changed are: glass, instrument panel, side impact bars, and tires. European tires are not DOT approved.

If there are no problems w/getting it serviced and DOT is saying its ok...then do it...you'll probably have to have it shipped over...I met someone in the UK who was originally from the Seattle area and he had his van shipped over for $800 (us)...he had to have it driven to Florida and then put onto a cargo ship to the UK...
