The squirrels take the nuts and pieces of fruit and other things that I leave out for them, they eat half of it or take a few bites, then they throw it away, pick up another item of the same type, eat half of that and throw it away, and this repeats. Why do they waste food?

Maybe they have an instinct that they need to leave something to decompose (a natural compost pile).

Or maybe the other item looks better than the current one. You know how it is, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Maybe they keep hoping that the fruit is healthy organic stuff, so they keep trying! Animals are pretty smart when it comes to food. The squirrels ate all the sunflower seeds we put out for the birds!!

Obviously the squirrels you are watching are male. It's a well known fact that males never finish ANYTHING.
