Yes, and when the economy finally crashes the poor will survive better then the rich. When you have nothing you just learn better survival instincts because you don't have a choice. I live in the inner city in an old fashioned neighborhood. I have had great times in my life when I partied with yuppies in the 80’s and 90’s and acted like a pig at the trough. Then the first layoff came when the company downsized, the next company I worked for just closed its door one day, next place of employment sent all the work to China. I am employed but I have not earned what I was making in 97 and probably never will. Luckily I had no children and I owned my own home. I’m presently working three jobs and paying my bills. I learned to survive but the big thing that saved me was I wasn’t living above my means. I feel there are too many young people who live in houses they really can’t manage to pay for, driving vehicles that they don’t have the funds for because the banks kept giving them more loans. When this economy crashes these people will be clueless. Taking a bus will be a traumatic experience at best. Living in tenements with the poor will make them suicidal. No cell phones, no Internet access, no cable and heaven forbid they can’t afford a Starbucks latte. All the conservatives will be crying out for social programs and will become liberals in a flash because the reality of being poor will hit them where it hurts the most their pocket books. The next Depression will make 1929 look like a cakewalk.

The right to be free is a GOD GIVEN right.
And poor people have every opportunity to better themselves. In 1960 if you weren't well off you couldn't go to college because you didn't have the money. Now as long as you get good grades in school there are hundreds of grants that will pay for your college education, and if that don't work the GOVERNMENT will loan you the money to go to college.
All you have to do is put some EFFORT into your end of the deal.
There's no such thing as a "Free lunch"
The rich people in this country got there by working for it originally. Yes there are some spoiled rich brats that were born with a silver spoon in their mouths.
But get educated, work hard and keep your nose clean and you too can be rich in the land of opportunity.
It's all up to you, I don't want people like Hillary giving my very hard earned dollars to lazy bums who think the world owes them everything on a silver platter without having to put out any effort at all to get it.

You are correct that they are slaves to the government, which is what the socialists in Congress want. You are wrong about capitalism.
The economy is NOT a zero sum game, meaning there are more dollars than what is in the pot right now. As the economy grows the pot grows larger and all in the game get more. Why do you think there was this outrageously large housing boom in the last six years. Larger pot and more players got some.
You do not understand the evil that is socialism and you should read more on it. Read these, get a basic understanding of economics, not just the crap the socialists fed you in the newspapers and TV, then come back and discuss the concepts.

Being poor (to me) means not being properly raised from childhood on the facts of how important it is to stay in school, get a good education, thus getting a good paying job. This generation has changed tremendously. Parents are getting younger. The mother has become soul provider for the family, and the father's are doing nothing, but droping the loads on them. These young mother's were not taught as teens to: "Keep your panties on",and the young father's were not taught how to respect these mother's,thus remains a cycle of unwanted pregnancies, single mother's,no time for school, because there's no babysitter, and last but not least "Welfare Lines". When I was a child during the 60's,my dad worked in the Steel Mills, and my mother was a Housewife. There were 11 of us kids, and my dad was able to provide food, clothes, and shelter for his family, but today, this is not possible, for a single mother of 3,unless she has a good job,and a man who's willing to be a "father". The "Working class" pays for Government Programs out of our tax dollars, otherwise there would be no "Welfare Checks,Food Stamps,Medicaid,Medicare, and so on. The rich people have obtain their wealth in some ways, that we may never know about, but they fell it is not their responsibility to help with these programs, simply because they did'nt start them (sort to speak). I fell they should donate not only their money, but their time to these organizations. Because my 3 children are adults,in the "State of Indiana",I can file "Single" and recieve only my "Federal Income Tax Return". I do not recieve a "State Income Tax Return". That check goes directly to "The State",to help these organizations pay for Food,Shelter, and Medical Benefits, for "The Poor". Maybe someday we will get a President, who can think of someway,to get "The Rich" to come out of their pockets, and give me back the miserly $300 they take from me at the end of each year! (Smile!)

Even in Communism the people in power have the most. The people in power make the rules. It is no different in any culture any society, any form of government. The only difference is that in capitalist societies the poor can become the rich. As far as is it working, look around, the capitalist countries have more money, better economies, better health care and schools than anywhere in the world. Even China is starting to use capitalist forms of business.

What's great about being poor in America is that you can move up. The poor do not always stay poor. Yes it's difficult, yes you have to make sacrafices, but nobody said it was going to be easy, well, if they did, they lied, because it's not easy. But it can be done, it's just a question of how bad you want it, and what you're willing to give up for it
Friday nights at the bar? Eating out, steaks? Weekends of relaxation? What will you give up so you can go to school at night and get a degree, so you can impress your boss enough that he gives you a promotion, so that you can educate yourself on what you need to do to own your own home..?
Only in America could a foreigner come over with $20 in his pocket, and grow up to be a major movie star and governor of California.

We are all slaves to gvoernment by your definition, it is simply a matter of degree of control over the servitude.
The rich DO pay taxes, so they help pay for the country. Do the "poor" pay taxes? Some, but for income taxes, many don't pay at all and indeed get tax credit payments and certainly benefit from welfare programs more than they pay in.

First, the rich does not make the laws. And, yes we are free!! Are people free in Cuba, or Russia? or China, or North Korea??It's the Politicians. Why are we ruled by certain people. Very simple. WE DO NOT VOTE!! most of the citizens are register voters, but do not vote.
I take you are a communist. Are the people under communist rule free and equal? NO!! Because not all citizens of Cuba live like Castro. Do they? Do all eat like him? dress like him?
If we don't like a law, we can change it! But like i've said: PEOPLE DO NOT VOTE. Oh yes, we'll *****, but coming voting time?

Er, i don't live in america or anything.. but think it's called the land of the free because of the time some engishmen in ancient history sailed to america and thus they were, like, free from puritanism... er.. ehehehe, i think that nickname (land of the free) was meant for history...not the government the U.S. is currently under.
