By the reflection of light from the leprechaun's pot of gold

you have to have the sun behind you and moisture in front of you. the light enters the raindrops and undergoes total internal reflection inside the raindrop (the same as light in a cats eye on the road), so the light comes out back towards you, and as it leaves the drop it is split by refraction into its' component colours.
I'm not sure why it comes out curved, but if you were to be high enough you can see it as a complete circle.
There is an excellent Open University program explaining it and showing weird effects like a rainbow over a still lake, which ends up giving 4 rainbows.
It also explained why the sky is noticeably lighter and darker between rainbows when there are 2.

They are not made they are just light being reflected trough moist air at a certain angle when light goes trough a water droplet the light from the Sun is dispersed thus giving out different colours and since the we cant' look over the Horizon (the earth is round) we see a Rainbow Coloured and curved.
Take care!

I have one other tidbit to add. There are always two rainbows, look on the outside of the bright colored one and most of the time you can see all or part of the second lighter one.

It is the refraction of the sun's light through water droplets in the atmosphere . When light goes through the droplets it is broken up into the colors of the spectrum . An easy way to remember the colors is to think of Roy G. Biv : red ,orange ,yellow , green , blue , indigo , and violet .

the Biblical answer is tht a rainbow is God's promise tht He will never again destroy the earth by flood.
The phenomenom is created by sun rays reflecting through the water/vapor in the sky creating the prism of colors or something like tht.
