See if you can find a true sentence (one that you know is true) that would bring a good attitude under the circumstances. For example the sentence "the teacher is there to help and look after you" will make a child go to school with a good attitude. And your attitude is what determines what you think.
So this is the exercise: when you think negatively, remember the sentence that you have chosen and believe, then you will know that you should drop the thoughts, and you will find that you don't want to. You gain strength to drop negative thoughts, by actually dropping them when you know should.
The most important time to actually drop the thoughts that you already have decided to drop, is when it is the hardest to for you to do so.
Sorry: no quick answer, but it is worth it because you want to change quite a fundemental thing in your life. Success is assured when you persist.
A wise man said: you cannot change anything in life, except your attitude. The implication is that your attitude determines your thoughts, thoughts determine actions, and actions determine what comes your way (how people react to you).
Be carefull and clever about it.
By the way: the above applies to every human being. My birthday is in two days. I want to cancel a get-together because of critisim from my family. The sentence that keeps me from doing that is something a friend told me. He said to me "I lay this at YOUR door to take the initiative for keeping a good relationship with your family, because you are the more gentle and mature one." When I remember what he said, I know I must carry on seeing them, and make sure that I treat them properly, and make sure that I tell one specific one what he is busy doing in a way that would not set us on seperate courses.

You can stop thinking so negative by doing. Go visit your grandma in the hospital with some flowers and home made cookies. Go visit your mom in jail with some chocolates and lemonade. Go visit your step dad and ask him to take you out to a great restaurant for your birthday. When you take time doing all these positive things it won't leave you any time to think negative. Happy Birthday!

I also have found faith in the Lord Jesus. Who also brought as both together, I give thanks every day now. I have been married 3 years to a great woman. who has brought me through this, with her faith as well. my advice St. Johns wort so you look and feel better and a Christain man who loves you when you also find faith

Well you have a lot to deal with so you are entitled to feel a bit negative, especially on your birthday. I bet your grandma and mother would rather be at home with you, and you can feel positive that you are not in hospital or jail. Have you got a friend(s) who can come and watch your favourite movie with you?
Wishing you a much better birthday next year.

Truthfully, you have good cause to experience some negativity or depression. Both feelings are nature’s way of getting your through stressful events. When the events pass, so should the mood. Each person deals with stress in different ways. If possible, find an activity to occupy your mind and let your mind “veg-out” while doing it. Housecleaning, lawn mowing, and similar tasks require little brain activity. (If you run out of housecleaning chores at your place, feel free to come over to my place and “veg-out” some more.)
I hope that your grandmother gets well soon. Make sure you go se her as often as possible. There is no need to entertain her when you visit; simply sitting in the room with her provides a great deal of comfort. It allows her to rest with the knowledge that a loved one with her. Happy Birthday to you! If your grandmother’s doctors permit, share a cupcake with her to celebrate. Grandparents love celebrating their grandkids birthdays.
Good luck!

Your negative thoughts are projected from within your mind. When you realize you are being negative, first ask yourself "Why am I doing this?" or "Why do I see it this way?", really listen for your answer, as though someone else asked the question.
Then transform that same thought into something you do not view as negative, but only as an experience in life. Then, most importantly, move on and Stay in the Present.
Know your family is there for you, in the flesh or no. Keep your head up, kid. :)

You can stop thinking negative by doing things that make you happy. It is silly but get some friends together and have a sleep over. No matter what age you are getting together with a bunch of women, laughing, and talking about like is very good for the soul.

I do a lot of praying when I feel negative, but you are surrounded by alot of negative issues look for happiness within yourself first and then get involved with people who have things going for them, happy people who are enjoying life and their positive energy will rub off on you. Don't live your life through your family cause you will never drop the negativity then. Find Christ and you will find Peace. Happy Birthday it gets greater later. Throw yourself a party!!!
