For those who don't want to sterilize their pets via surgery but want to be responsible pet owners or to give to feral cats in their food to prevent them from reproducing? Can't the drug companies develop a safe drug for animals?

Yes everyone should get their animal spayed or neutered but this question addresses an alternative especially for feral cats (and I have trapped and had sterilized feral cats). Most people will not go to the effort to do what I do. They just feed the stray cats in their neighborhoods and they breed and the cycle continues. Regarding a pill for dogs, I have a neighbor with a pure bred dog who won't spay b/c they think they might breed and sell puppies someday. Meanwhile the dog is left in a fence yard and can attract male dogs. or the dog could get out and end up pregnant.

They can. Do you want to administer it daily to your pet?

Well, when you compare the one-time cost of sterilization, and the ongoing cost of such a medication, it's just not worth it, especially considering having to shove a pill down your cats throat every day. Just get them spayd/neutered people!!!

There are hormonal birth control options for dogs and cats to delay onset of heat until a more convenient time.

For better information, however, please contact your vet. I would avoid internet information and internet drug purchases, at least until I had discussed the particular situation with my vet, including factors such as my pets age, health, future reproductive plans, and reproductive history.

Well I wouldn't be surprised if they are, and it is just taking the scientist a lot longer to do it. Well, for surgery for animals, it is the owners chose. It's a big decision they must make. Ask the vet this question to, you never know what they might say. :)
