I think Smudge is just because it alliterates with Smith, but I'll be interested if anyone finds another explanation.
Nobby Clark comes from the fact that clerks in the City of London used to wear top hats (which were called "nobby" hats).

Nobby Clark was in the Bay City Rollers I think. Don't know about the Smith Smudge thing, but it's probably just illiteration.

Well hon it sure does depend on that particular culture how they want to pronounce or to say the surname, but in South Africa it all depends on that nationality and with SA having 17 national languages the way of saying a name depends on if there is a click{ meaning the x y z } it sound like putting your tongue in the top of your mouth and making a clicking sound. I don't know if that makes sense. But most of our black languages have another pronounciation for exactly the same words.
I suppose it also depends on the way you hear that particular word or surname.

I have never heard that one before. Usually nicknames are given to us since we were babies. My family calls me Linds, my name is Lindsay, so most the time it is a shortened version of your name. I call my daughter Char-Char(Charlotte), my son is my Gabey- baby(Gabriel). Sometimes even in highschool kids pick up nicknames from there friends.

sometimes, nicknames come from what you look like, the kind of stuff you do, or the things you've done in the past. for example when i was younger i couldn't say my name(only 2) so i called myself mena instead of michelle.
