I'd just like to buy a "simple" one -- no camera, no video playback, no picture storage -- just a caller ID and text messaging. It would be nice if it was a flip phone.

Look at sanyo.com or samsung.com. I used to have basic phones, but decided I wanted a toy again.

Most providers have them. They are the most durable and least likely to break. They have basic functions at almost free prices.
Remember, the free phones are always that good. I had the Sanyo 4500 and the 4920 and they are the basic of phones, when I got the 4500 it was 99.00 the 4920 was only 40.00 after rebate. Good phones... Solid... Go to cnet.com for reviews.... I always use that site for these purposes.

Threre are lots of phones that are both free and have a few extra features, I recomend the Sanyo 3100, it has everything you were looking for and a camera and speakerphone. And its free with a contract. It also looks decent and is sturdy.
