The closest thing in reality, I think, would be the Affenpinscher.
I always thought it looked a bit like a cross between a terrier and a chimp. Affen means apes in German.
Abyssinian wire-haired tripehound is a great made up breed, though.

As two others I've seen at least have said, he's an abysinnian wire-haired tripehound.
I am still a proud member of the fan club so that was a 45p postal order well spent in 1983!! (though cannot find my badges.....well it was 23 years ago but it had a wallet too...joy!) and still haven't forgiven my Mum for chucking out my huge collection of Beano's INCLUDING the 50th anniversary edition. rant...blah....rant!! Though I do still have some 'comic library' things they used to produce.
I write to DC Thompson and no luck with back issues...dagnammit!!! They sent me a very nice letter though. Considering I was 20 when I wrote!! LOL)
I now have a 3 year old son and am going to get him involved!

He is a little mutt! hehehe No, seriously, I think he is a little lurcher that's crossed with a poodle. There has been an episode were Gnasher and his family were being accused of being rats but found out that he is a "_____ wild dog" ( not sure what country it is.

I remember the first episode in which Gnasher appeared! Denis thought it was a catapillar, but it just kept eating and growing!
