It is a Windows XP Pro, and is 2 yrs old. I think that I may have deleted my soundcard by accident. There is not even a sound icon in the lower right hand corner. I cant even check it if its the volume, because the volume doesnt exist. there is no device to check the volume on.

Go to the properties of my computer. Click Device Manager button in the Hardware tab. Check whether there is a yellow mark in your sound controllers. If so, right click it and update your driver. You can place volume icon in the task bar by ticking it from Sounds and Audio Devices of Control Panel.

You should be able to go into the control panel and click on add hardware and it should restore the values. I have never had that happen when erasing my computer.
