It is part of the American work ethic (also called the Protestant Work Ethic). We believe that you should "raise yourself up by your bootstraps" or work hard to get what you want. However we were also raised to be polite and to share. You can never achieve what you want if you hurt everyone to get it. So instead you reach out to people and help them when they need it, but you also work hard and get help when you need it. We want people to succeed, so it makes sense for us to help each other out.
An example of this is at my University. I help my peers understand the material so they succeed. I want to be #1, but if they don't succeed then the country will be worse out. We need to have the best and the brightest to lead us, however we want to be the best and have great people to support us.

I consider myself to be a very competitive and very supportive person.
Recently I had a job interview and the people doing the interviews were running late. I got a chance to chat with the lady who was interviewing for the same job as me.
She was so nice, and we had a good talk.
I wished her luck.
I want the job, but if I don't get it, I hope she does, so yes I'm competitive, but I'm also supportive. And if I knew her better, I would call her and congratulate her if she got the job, or I'd call and tell her (if I got the job) that another one will come along for her.
Usually, though, if I know someone very close to me is applying for a job, I won't apply unless there is more than one position available.
But people are people--it has nothing to do with being American.
Some people are nice, and some people are not. And most people are a mix of both.

I think it's just because you are who you are. I mean, wouldn't you prefer to be treated nicely? I would. I've received some really good answers/advice on here. I appreciate it too. There ARE some bad apples out there. I have more trouble understanding why THEY would be so mean sometimes. It's a lot easier to be nice. We're supposed to care about each other. Basically, I think it is human nature to care about other people. I like to live by --- do unto others as you would like them to do unto you........

just because you get someone to answer you on the internet don't mean that is the kind of person they are. most people would not piss on you if you were on fire. and if it cost them 50 cent ......they would set you on fire.
stop a stranger to ask them a question that would take mor then a few words to answer. bet you will see what i am saying.
