I ran this by my lead guitar man, Steve "The Colonel" Cropper, generally regarded as the #2 guitarist in the world, topped only by Hendrix. Although The Colonel is an R&B man, he says the best guitar solo was done by Eric Johnson on The Cliffs of Dover. His second choice is Eruption, by Eddie Van Halen.

Personally, I like the lead intro to Sweet Home Chicago. But The Colonel tells me I might be out of touch.

The intro to Led Zep's Achilles Last Stand ( menacing and eerie!)Rush's "Spirit of Radio" ( the intro is a Lifeson trademark), Those two are legendary! Eddie V. Halen's "Eruption' ( NOBODY did that during its era-----) and Black Sabbath's 'War Pigs' ( which got covered a thousand times by most metalheads!) Air guitars, anyone?

Spirit of Radio by Rush. Limelight by Rush (esp the solo). Xanadu by Rush. Closer to the Heart by Rush. Freewill by Rush. Practically anything by Rush! Oh yeah and the F#minor11 chord John McLaughlin plays on that track on Visions of the Emerald Beyond which I play with my thumb on the bottom string. Most things by John. Reelin' in the Years. Vincent Black Lightning. Most things by Richard Thompson, all great to play, so natural.
