Willie O'Ree was the 1st "NHL" player in 1957-58.

Herbert H. (Herb) Carnegie was one of the first good black hockey players before Willie O'Ree. But never made it to the NHL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herb_Carnegie

Some of the first black hockey players ever were freed railroad workers in Nova Scotia from the early 1900's. They even had their own league.

Willie O'Ree in 1957-58 in 2 games for the Boston Bruins. He then played most of the 1960-61 Season.
