A giant tortoise spent ¼ of his life in a house with a family, 1/8 of his life in an animal rehabilitation clinic to repair some damage he got to his shell when he fell down the stairs at the house, and ½ of his life at Disney World in the Amazing Animals Show after it was discovered he could beat a rabbit in a race. If the Tortoise spent 10 years in the wild before the family took him in, how old is he?

assuming this question does not involve any tricks;

he spent
1-(1/2+1/4+1/8)=1/8 of his life in wild

thus, he is 80 years old

LOL.
this is a freakishly weird question but i'll give it a go anyway.

first add all the fractions up to find out what fraction of his life is left.
1/4 + 1/8 + 1/2 = 7/8
1 - 7/8 = 1/8, which is the fraction of his life that is unaccounted for ie. the one where he was in the wild.

therefore, 10 years = 1/8 of his life.
as a result, his age is 10 x 8 = 80 years!

this was a blast to answer. hope you understand the math behind it!

those 10 years spent in the wilderness represent the 1/8 of his life not mentioned, right? which means the tortoise is 80 years old

1/4x + 1/8x + 1/2x +10 =x
2/8x + 1/8x + 4/8x -x = -10
7/8 x -8/8 x = -10
-1/8 x = -10
x = -10 * (-8)
x = 80 years old

Tortoises can live for a long time... more than 200 myears. So I'd say he was still a spring chicken.
