If there is a fire in the fireplace, then you are getting what you really need -- heat and warmth and light. You don't need items on the matlepiece (knickknacks, pictures and ornaments) that are only there for show. Also, fires need a certain amount of attention, especially at the beginning, or they go out. If you give all your attention to the items on the mantlepiece, chances are that the fire will go out

When you are in a relationship, then you are getting what you need -- love and support and companionship. You don't need eyecandy and other distractions that are only there for show. Also, relationships need a certain amount of attention, or they come to an end. If you give all your attention to others outside the relationship, you are likely to lose it.

In other words...concentrate of the thing that *matters* not on the insignificant.

It's actually "You don't look at the mantle piece while you're stoking the fire."
It's not a very nice phrase and I hope you won't use it in the future.

It refers to men having sex with women that they consider to be ugly. When you're stoking a fire you are concentrating on the fire and not the decorative mantle above the fire.

That's how a man justifies a cheap thrill when he's using a woman for her body only. As long as he's satisfied in his nether regions, he he doesn't care what her face (mantle) looks like.
