Almost all lucid dreaming takes place during the REM phase of sleep. However a very small minority have claimed to have awareness of being asleep outside of the REM phases.
Generally lucid dreaming is as restful as non-lucid dreaming. You may be aware that you will increase the likelihood of lucid dreaming during the later stages of sleep when the REM cycles become more frequent. The dreaming activity increases as the sleep progresses and if you take your sleep into 'overtime' the dreams tend to become longer and easier to remember. If I sleep 8 to 10 hours the last two hours will usually have been full of dreams and if I wake up bang in the middle of an REM cycle I can feel quite drowsy for a while as I wake up. If I do a lot of sleeping say over a weekend I find that I actually feel more tired generally over that period but once I go back into my normal routine I feel that the extra sleep I had at the weekend has helped to restore my energy levels.

Lucid dreaming means dreaming while knowing that you are dreaming.
A minority of lucid dreams (according to the research of LaBerge and colleagues, about 10 percent) are the result of returning to REM (dreaming) sleep directly from an awakening with unbroken reflective consciousness.
The basic definition of lucid dreaming requires nothing more than becoming aware that you are dreaming. However, the quality of lucidity can vary greatly. When lucidity is at a high level, you are aware that everything experienced in the dream is occurring in your mind, that there is no real danger, and that you are asleep in bed and will awaken shortly. With low-level lucidity you may be aware to a certain extent that you are dreaming, perhaps enough to fly or alter what you are doing, but not enough to realize that the people are dream representations, or that you can suffer no physical damage, or that you are actually in bed.

Lucid dreaming is not the same as what happens when you sleep, it happens when your subconcious is free, but your concious mind is still active.
It is a similar state to meditation and is not at all restfull, and probably could not be called sleep.

Lucid dreams happen when any other dream usually does:in the REM state.
I've had several lucid dreams and I felt rested. In fact, the whole experience of being lucid is more like a rush to me.

REM sleep is when we dream. It stands for rapid eye movement as strangely our eyes do the things that they would do if they were in the dream that we were having - very strange. For every two (approx.) hour sleep cycle we have REM sleep for 30 minutes. If you are deprived of REM sleep then you start to hallucinate when you are not asleep. So it is vital, but maybe not as restful as other types of sleep.
