Once a year you celebrate that first day your mother saw you, held you in her arms and started making plans for your life.
Than again, though you're one year older, you are also one year smarter, if that year was not waisted on anything else but learning.
And, finally, what's wrong with feeling special for one day on that occasion ? The rest of the year you can feel special for millions of other reasons.

Personally I don't celebrate, today is my birthday, and I'm another year older and another year wiser, that is the celebration.

Others like to have a party and cake because everyone deserves to feel special once a year and celebrate the day they were born. It starts with the parents celebrating them as children. It's fun to have a birthday party for some people.

Birthday is celebrated to appreciate the goodness of God upon one's lives over the past one year and to tell God to continue to guide and protect one throughout the remaining years of one's life. Here it calls for caution, it is not a time to be throwing parties here and there, it is a time of sober reflection if you are an adult, a time to go down the memory lane of one's lives, reflect on the journey of life so far, amend and correct mistakes (that one can still amend or correct) think about the areas one can still make one's life useful to humanity and move closer to God.

Are you a Jehovah's Witness? Just curious. The Witnesses don't celebrate birthdays (not even Jesus') because they consider it to be worshipping the creation rather than the creator. I think they're taking things a little to seriously. A birthday to me just sets aside a day for us to remember someone and give them their special day to feel loved. Sometimes in this busy world, it's easy to forget about those we care about and love. A birthday on the calendar reminds us to pay more attention!

It is not the people celebrating their own birthday, but their loved ones who celebrate the fact that they were born.

You have a valid point .. but many people won't share that with you. In fact most of them celebrate the idea of passing one more year safe and happy before they die ..

The symbol of lighting off a candle in that party is totally misinterpreted .. it signs for loosing one more year/candle of their remaining years in life ..

the meaning of birthday, in my opinion, is that you celebrate your coming to life, not the year that passed..
