As long as the possum is surviving just fine, leave him alone. They very, very rarely carry rabies and don't carry any other disease that any other animal - like a rabbit, etc. - wouldn't carry. In fact, they're really very docile and may hiss, but won't bother you at all if you don't bother them. If he appears to be in danger or you think he may be, see if you can catch him in a cage and release in the wild - or ask a wildlife sanctuary.
