If they said that it has to be because they decided that Israel has violated the Geneva Conventions.

The Conventions are at risk anytime a State's existence is threatened since the State's first priority is its own survival.

Amnesty could not have said that Israel did not have the right of self defense. The problem for Israel is that Hezbollah is not a state and only Lebanon is bound by the Geneva Conventions. It is Lebanon's duty to enforce the Conventions on their own land, which of course they can't or won't do.

So: a violation of the Conventions may be a fact (just as it is a fact that the USA has violated the Conventions in Iraq, Guantanamo and perhaps Afghanistan). But Amnesty does not enforce any law, least of all international law. It just states its own opinions, as a gadfly. That is no bad thing. Indeed, it is a good thing.

Note that Amnesty has national chapters. You did not say whether it was a national chapter, or AI headquarters speaking, or where you saw the statement. I am assuming -- without checking, since it's not germane to my reply -- that what you wrote is true.

israel is basically just making up the rules as it goes along, saying its justified in bombing this hospital here, these homes there.. one time a helicopter fired missiles at a couple of red cross ambulances. And they deliberately bombed the UN outpost which was there to help STOP fighting

Fair enough the lebanese have probably sheltered fighters. but these fighters would still be brothers, cousins, friends, whatever, and in a popular movement.. people down there are probably sympathetic to their cause. From judging what i know about their previous wars against israel, plus the Lebanese civil war, I can understand them if not agree

If don't think Israel is a war criminal, fine- its backed up by the US, which pretty much is the law, and everyone lays down and accepts it except in the mideast cos theyre so **** poor theres not much left to lose anyway. but if you dont think theyre out of order for attacking and killing scores of people just to look tough and provoke retaliation.. then youre from the US i suppose

Actually the Lebanese were quite hopeful having rebuilt most of the country from the last 2 wars...

Hezbollah is handing out money... Lebanon has promised larger amounts(backed by Saudi Arabia).

Israel will spend within their country for repairs(backed by US)

I have wondered were they would be before the war with half of the money spent much less the money to be spent!!!

Because Israel thinks it can do whatever the hell it wants in the name of "God" as the "chosen" people. They see Lebanese and Palestine's as inferior, and not worthy of "Human" Rights. Though Palestine does nothing to help this situation, only make it worse and the BS and bigotry and war continue!
