There are many nests with roofs. Underground nests. Nests that tunnel into the side of riverbanks. Woodpecker's nests. Weaver nests. Nesting in caves. Some birds even construct huge mounds of compost over the eggs and let the heat of decomposition provide the warmth. That's a roof, of sorts.

Usually, though, the mama herself is the roof. Dad too, many of them share nest duty.

It is an example of evolution at its best:
If it would be any survival requirement for the entire species to have a roof over their nest, then the ones which don't do that would already have become extinct. Looks like for some bird species simply don't need a "roof", others found it an advantage, of even only a "habit" that sits now firmly in their genes.

They are well adapted to rain, so they don't care. A nest is just for the young.

Also, there are advantages for building nests that has no roof.

1) easy to build. It is fast to have it completes
2) lighter - So that you don't have to find only sturdy trees to build it on. With lighter nest, you can build it tall and at the edge of the branch, other land base predator can not reach there.
3) open environment Birds can take off and land any time. Don't have to squeeze out and take off.

Many birds do build nests with roofs.

Others simply don't care about getting wet or that the time or energy investment isn't worth it.

Why do more work if you either you don't mind a little water or if it isn't worth the time or effort?

Somehow I'm sensing this is an excuse to rant on evolution though.

some bird type build roofs over their nests but these do not provide shelter from the rain.
Birds and lizards build nests to hatch and raise their young, mostly rain doesn't matter to eggs and cheeks, but sun' especially in hotter climates, does. so you'll find nests with roofs in the tropics and not in temperate zones
