Click on the following link, and download a small file. When the file is downloaded on the computer. Double click , to open a dialog box, go through it, and then it will start the download of Yahoo messenger.
After Installing YM, if you do not want to use it for some time, You can right click on the icon, on Lower right corner on your computer and select Exit. By default it will start as soon as you start your computer.

It does not slow down your computer. But it may slow down your internet speed a bit. So you can turn it off whenever you want.
